I’ve always been interested in how things work, and finding ways to make things work. Solving problems is what I have always enjoyed, so engineering is as much a way of life as a job. It also helped that a lot of people in my family are engineers,so I had a good idea of what engineering involved. I find that is the main thing that keeps other people from becoming engineers – basically they don’t understand what it is all about. Because engineering covers such a wide range of subjects, it’s difficult to explain. Some people may be inspired by spectacular buildings, others by fast cars, others by computers or mobile phones, others by artificial implant technologies such as hearts or replacement hip joints. The one thing all these have in common is that they needed engineers to develop them, but all those engineers were different and had different skill sets, but applied them to solving problems. It’s that diversity that inspires me.

Watching videos of rocket launches and people walking on the moon made me feel like the field is really interesting and useful for the development of mankind.

I always wanted to be an engineer. I chose robotics because I watched too much transformers as a child.

To be honest, I don’t think I was inspired to become an engineer. I didn’t know any engineers or really understand what it involved. It was only through following my interests and subjects that I was good at that I wound up in an engineering career.

I’d say I’m inspired now, given the opportunities and exciting new technologies that I see in my day to day.
