• Question: Do you think you have been successful in achieving your goals (from when you first knew you wanted to be an engineer), or are you still getting there? Do you have any new goals?

I’m not sure I had any fixed goals as such. I have always enjoyed the technical aspect of being an engineer, and there is always something to learn because new things are being developed all the time. At some point though, opportunities to do other things crop up. I didn’t plan to become a manager until I was asked to take on a role temporarily (I then ended up doing that for 6 years!). I also didn’t plan on becoming a University Professor until the university approached me and offered me the job. So you see, it is not always the goals you originally set that determine how things will work out.

It is always good to have goals, when you complete some, you need more rather than just accept you have done all you can. I have goals to get to higher position than I am now and earn more money and make a greater contribution but a few years ago my goals were to get a 1st class degree.
